Teeth whitening

After your eyes, your smile is the second thing that people notice when they look at your face. Everyone should be able to have a whiter smile if they desire.

There are two main types of whitening methods used during the day. Although there is a great degree of variability in the types of light, materials and concentrations of agents etc, those are essentially the two main methods by which we whiten teeth.

At home whitening

At home whitening is when a custom set of plastic "trays" are made specifically for your teeth. These trays are custom designed to limit the amount of agent used and to protect your gums from excessive agent spilling onto them. You use these trays over a set period (usually weeks) for 30 mins - 1 hr a day (depending on how sensitive your teeth are) to whiten your teeth. This method usually produces a very good result as there is a significant amount of time (over the whole process) that the whitening agent is in contact with your teeth. It is not absolutely necessary to wear the trays continuously for the period of whitening so you are able to continue on with your life with minimal disruption. As a hint, you could wear them whilst doing the dishes or watching a TV program!

In clinic whitening

In clinic whitening is when a whitening agent, usually much stronger in concentration than the one used with at home whitening is applied to your teeth and "activated" by a light (or other source). The procedure is done for approximately 1 hr - 1 hr 30 and is applied professionally and controlled professionally. This type of whitening produces a variable result as people's teeth differ significantly in biological makeup but most people experience a good result. The advantage that people appreciate is that the time taken, is a lot less.

Of course, you can have both types of whitening and this is the recommended method if you want the "best" result for your teeth. We'd love to help you whiten your teeth but before we can help you, we need to actually look at your teeth to determine if they are suitable for whitening. If you have fillings or untreated decay or a whole host of other types of problems, they can outcome the influence of thewhitening procedure. There's also different types of staining and different types of staining need different ways of addressing their effects. For example, "extrinsic" stain i.e from tannins in the diet or nicotine from smoking, has to be physically cleaned of the tooth whereas if some people have yellow teeth from the effects of aging, cleaning the teeth won't do anything and they'll have to whiten their teeth with a whitening agent! Because of this, quoted costs for changing the shade of your teeth can vary considerably, from the cost of a simple clean to the making of "crowns" (caps) on your teeth depending on how broken down and discoloured your teeth are.

As a little friendy but serious note, teeth whitening as determined by the Dental Board of Australia, is an irreversible procedure on teeth hence it should only be done with the advice and guidance of a health professional. Please consult us before you consider doing anything that will affect your teeth, gums or general health and wellbeing.  {back to top}
